Pub Spy very impressed with The Market Bar
'It was a wet Tuesday in Longford and the Pubmobile trundled behind an eighteen-wheeler truck.
We took it as divine intervention when The Market bar came looming out of the deluge.
This well appointed establishment sits in the centre of Longford Town, and on a wet day, gives off a warm and welcoming as you hurry out of the downpour.
However, Pubspy entered with a sense of trepidation. His commandoes, like their military counterparts, are are veterans of many a campaign in the field.
On entering The Market Bar, the soft lighting thankfully set Pub Spy at his ease immediately. Aquick scan reveals this boozer is split into a number of cosy sections, some more hidden than others.
Pub Spy sought a spot to disappear and decided on a back bar which is entered through Wild West stlye saloon doors, perfect to make a dramatic exit later if it is required. Our pints setteled as we did. A business-like barman passed the 120 odd seconds or so with friendly banter.
There's one thing Pub Spy will say about bad weather, it is the single best conversation ice-breaker there is. Total strangers feel no hesitation in engaging in a bit of chat when it's pouring down outside.
It was one such gent who went on to regalePub Spy about the reasonswhy our summer was a washout and September was a scorcher - well relatively speaking.
With just a beer as a visual prop, he demonstrated how the earth shifts in its orbit ever so slightly every year.Over time, this means that what we once thought was September, is in fact August and so on. Brillliant.
The weather guru then went on to scienifically prove thaqt llife was better before TV and that the craic in pubs was mightier years ago. All this while, the pints continued to flow, and they were, as they say in Longford, only gorgeous. If there's a better way to kill a wet Tuesday afternoon - in the absence of a scantily-clad starlet, Pub Spy would love to know.
VERDICT
The Pint: Delightful and decent value at €3.10
Toilets: You would like to curl up with a good book!
Athmosphere: Not bad at all for a wet Tuesdsay.
